Why Stress Looks Different in Children Than It Does in Adults (And Why That's Important to Understand)

If you've ever watched your child have a meltdown over something that seems small, you may have found yourself wondering:

“Why are they reacting like this?”

As adults, we often recognize stress in ourselves. We might say things like:

  • “I've just had a long day.”

  • “I'm feeling overwhelmed.”

  • “I can't think straight right now.”

But when children experience that same stress, it rarely sounds like that.

Instead, it looks like arguing, crying, refusing to listen, shutting down, or saying “I don't know.”

One of the biggest mindset shifts I help parents make is this: your child's behavior is often communicating what their nervous system doesn't yet have the words to say.

Children and Adults Experience the Same Stress Response

Whether you're 6 or 60, your nervous system has one primary job: keep you safe.

When your brain perceives enough safety, it can focus on learning, connecting, problem-solving, and managing emotions. When it perceives danger (or even the possibility of danger), it shifts into survival mode.

This happens automatically. It's not a choice.

There isn’t necessarily a difference in how children experience stress compared to adults, but there is often a difference in how that stress gets expressed.

Why Stress Looks Different in Kids

Children and adults have the same autonomic nervous system, but they don't have the same brain development.

The part of the brain responsible for planning, impulse control, emotional awareness, decision-making, and flexible thinking (the prefrontal cortex) continues developing well into early adulthood (generally finishing development by the mid 20s).

For both children and adults, there is less activation in the prefrontal cortex (the “thinking” part of the brain) and more activation in the limbic system (or the “emotional” part of the brain) when a stress response gets activated.

That means adults are generally better able to:

  • Recognize they're stressed

  • Put feelings into words

  • Pause before reacting

  • Choose more socially acceptable ways of expressing emotions

  • Use coping strategies intentionally

Children are still learning these skills. When they're overwhelmed, behavior often becomes their primary language.

The Same Nervous System State Can Look Very Different

Although children and adults experience the same stress responses, they often express them differently.

The Fight Stress Response: Restoring Safety Through Control

When the nervous system shifts into a fight response, it's trying to eliminate a perceived threat or regain a sense of control.

Adults might:

  • Snap at their partner

  • Become defensive during conversations

  • Raise their voice

  • Criticize themselves or others

  • Feel easily irritated

  • Become controlling or micromanage

  • Slam a cabinet or door

Children might:

  • Hit, kick, or throw things

  • Argue about everything

  • Refuse directions

  • Yell or scream

  • Blame a sibling

  • Have an explosive meltdown

While the behaviors look different, the nervous system is trying to accomplish the same goal: restore a sense of safety.

The Flight Stress Response: Escaping the Stress

In a flight response, the nervous system prepares to move away from what feels overwhelming.

Adults might:

  • Doom scroll for hours

  • Throw themselves into work

  • Stay constantly busy

  • Avoid difficult conversations

  • Cancel plans

  • Seek repeated reassurance

  • Leave the room during conflict

Children might:

  • Avoid homework

  • Hide in their bedroom

  • Ask to stay home from school

  • Complain of stomachaches before school

  • Run away when upset

  • Leave the table during conversations

  • Become overly silly or distracted

Avoidance isn't laziness. Often, it's the nervous system trying to reduce overwhelm.

The Freeze Stress Response: Feeling Stuck

Sometimes the nervous system doesn't know whether to fight or flee. Instead, it pauses.

Adults might:

  • Stare at their computer without starting a task

  • Procrastinate

  • Forget what they were about to say

  • Feel mentally foggy

  • Struggle to make decisions

  • Go blank during conflict

Children might:

  • Say “I don't know” repeatedly

  • Stare into space

  • Go quiet

  • Have difficulty making simple choices

  • Take a long time to answer questions

  • Look like they aren't listening

This is one reason children who are overwhelmed often appear “uncooperative.” In reality, their brain may have temporarily lost access to the flexible thinking needed to respond.

The Shutdown Response: Conserving Energy

When the nervous system becomes overwhelmed and doesn't believe fight-or-flight will restore safety, it may shift into shutdown (sometimes called collapse).

The goal becomes conserving energy until the threat passes.

Adults might:

  • Stay in bed all day

  • Isolate from friends

  • Feel emotionally numb

  • Ignore emails and messages

  • Lose motivation

  • Watch TV for hours because everything else feels like too much

Children might:

  • Withdraw to their room

  • Say “I don't care”

  • Stop engaging in favorite activities

  • Seem unusually quiet

  • Lie on the floor instead of participating

  • Refuse to talk

  • Struggle to begin homework

What can look like laziness or defiance is sometimes a nervous system that has simply become overwhelmed.

Why Children Need Co-Regulation

One of the biggest differences between children and adults is that children are still learning how to regulate their nervous systems.

Adults rely more heavily on self-regulation.

Children rely much more on co-regulation.

That means they borrow a sense of safety from the adults around them.

Your regulated presence helps your child's nervous system gradually return to a place where learning, thinking, and problem-solving become possible again.

This doesn't mean staying perfectly calm all the time.

It means recognizing that your child's behavior is often telling you something about what their nervous system is experiencing.

A Note About Neurodivergence and the Stress Response

For neurodivergent children, including children with ADHD or autism, the nervous system may reach these protective states more quickly or more often.

Not because something is “wrong,” but because they frequently experience challenges that place greater demands on their nervous system, such as:

  • Sensory overload

  • Unpredictable transitions

  • Social ambiguity

  • Masking throughout the school day

  • Executive functioning demands

  • Difficulty interpreting internal body signals (interoception)

This is one reason many parents describe their child as “holding it together” at school before completely falling apart at home.

Home is often where the nervous system finally feels safe enough to release the stress it has been carrying all day.

From "What's Wrong?" to "What's Being Communicated?"

One of the biggest shifts in therapy isn't changing behavior first. It's changing how we understand behavior.

Instead of asking:

“Why is my child acting like this?”

Try asking:

“What might my child's nervous system be responding to right now? What is their behavior trying to tell me about their experience?”

That question invites curiosity instead of judgment.

It helps us move beyond managing behaviors on the surface and begin understanding what they're communicating underneath.

Because when children feel understood, they don't just behave differently.

They begin to feel safer, more connected, and better able to navigate life's challenges.
